Modern pirates don’t use cannonballs or great sailing ships. No, modern pirates use larger vessels to overcome smaller vessels to attack and board. They like to take advantage of the modern advantage of having smaller vessels carry cargo and most especially, the smaller crews that command merchant vessels. Nowadays, modern shipping routes favor smaller and narrower bodies of water. This makes the cargo vessels very susceptible to being attacked and boarded by modern pirates using smaller motorboats. Modern places for rampant acts of piracy include the Gulf of Aden, the Strait of Malacca, the Niger Delta, and the South China Sea.
