So. Pirates have turned out to have historically been very democratic and egalitarian. More so than any other occupation during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Pirates had a set code of hierarchy among their crew to determine how looted goods should be distributed. Gold and silver were not a pirate’s common plunder or treasure, sailing equipment and medicine were highly sought after. In fact, a sea doctor’s equipment was worth $470,000 in modern value! A pirate’s captain and quartermaster would always distribute these kinds of plunder equally and fairly among their crew.
