Did you know that what we now know as the Florida Keys were all at one time a part of Spain and the British Colonies, and was U.S. Florida Territory? Even the Bahamians in the past have laid claim over the Keys. The Bahamians would take goods salvaged from wrecks in the Florida Keys to Nassau rather than to St. Augustine for intercession. The end of the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812 increased shipping through the channels of Florida, which meant, of course, an increase in the wrecking of ships. The Crown’s share from the auction of these salvaged goods ended up supporting a handsome percentage of Nassau’s economy.
