Although actual cases of pirates burying treasure were rare, Captain William Kidd is believed to have buried a good portion of his personal treasure on Long Island before sailing to New York. Originally, Kidd had been commissioned by the British government as a privateer, but his actions turned into acts of piracy, and was wanted as a pirate. It had been his hope that the treasure he buried on Long Island would serve as a tool of bargaining in avoiding punishment. Unfortunately, it didn’t work and Kidd was hanged as a pirate. Although, historically, it is believed that Kidd’s trial and sentence were wrong and unjust.
