The term was popularized by author Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and referred to pirates who attacked Spanish ships across the Caribbean throughout the 17th century. Buccaneer is actually a synonym for pirate. However, buccaneer crews were usually larger than just simple pirate ships and crews. They were better equipped to attack coastal cities and stronghold ports. More specifically, buccaneers were localized to the Caribbean area, rather than pirates that sailed in the Indian Ocean.
