Acts of piracy can be traced to ancient times – ever since our oceanic waterways have been used for commerce. The earliest documented instances of piracy are the exploits of the sea-going peoples who threatened the Aegean and Mediterranean in the 14th century. Many ancient peoples engaged in what we call piracy – the Illyrians, the Greeks, the Tyrrhenians, and even the Romans. These people would loot, pillage, and would even kidnap children to sell as slaves.
