We all know Sir Walter Raleigh is famous for setting out to find the mythic city of El Dorado in 1595, which Raleigh never found. He did write about his ventures to South America and claimed that he did come close to seeing the famous Golden City of Manoa. These narratives were very unrealistic, but nonetheless, because Raleigh was so respected as a brilliant explorer, he spurred hundreds of unsuccessful searches for the legendary city.
