Even though we love our buried treasure and our treasure maps in our favorite works from the Pirates of the Caribbean saga to Stevenson’s Treasure Island, there are actually very few real, documented cases of pirates burying treasure. One of the few well-known cases of buried treasure involves Sir Francis Drake. He went on a raid at the train of Nombre de Dios and then buried the treasure that he had taken. After leaving to find his ships, Drake then returned to retrieve his loot and sail back to England. Drake didn’t even need a map!
