Did you know there are legends that some ships were intentionally lured into danger by the use of false lights at disorienting coordinates? Wreckers would sometimes hang lanterns from the necks of animals and would walk them across the beaches. Their intent was to fool the captains and sailors into believing these slow-moving lights were actually drifting ships in the distance. So this would prompt the tricked ships to change course, run aground, and require the services of the salvagers! Learn about Key West Shipwreck history and more by visiting our KEY WEST MUSEUM.
